First 2 Auditory Brainstem Implants (ABI) in Malaysia

26 December 2016

Sarawak General Hospital created history on 28th and 29th June, 2016 when two neurosurgeons, Dr Albert Wong and Dr Donald Liew, together with an ENT surgeon, Associate Professor Dr Tang Ing Ping successfully implanted the first Auditory Brainstem Implant (ABI) in our country for two patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and hearing disability. These two patients suffered from hearing loss as a result of bilateral acoustic neuromas and surgery to remove the tumours. They were fortunate to have their implants jointly sponsored by Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, KTS Groups and the implant company. The operations were uneventful and the devices were turned on in August 2016. Currently the two patients are still undergoing rehabilitation and both of them show promising signs of improvement and progress.
